The one thing a seated customer will read
A placemat is in front of someone who has ordered and is now waiting, with nothing else to look at. There is no other piece of restaurant print with that much guaranteed attention.
Most are wasted on a repeated logo. The ones that earn their place carry something worth the wait — the story of the dish, a map of where the beans come from, next month’s offer, a QR code to the loyalty sign-up.
Kraft or white is a positioning decision
The same artwork reads as a neighbourhood cafe on kraft brown and as a chain on white glossy. Choose the stock for what you want the room to feel like, not for what the design looks like flat on a screen.
Watch the plate
The centre of the mat disappears under a plate the moment the food arrives. Keep the things you want read in the border — the outer 7 or 8 cm all the way round is the part that stays visible through the whole meal.

Table mats: Common questions
Will food and oil soak through a paper placemat?
Some will, and that is expected — these are single-sitting mats. Glossy stock resists longer than wood free because of the coating. If you are serving something genuinely wet, go to 135gsm glossy and accept that the mat is replaced every cover.
Is a placemat a good place to put the menu?
For a casual or fast-casual restaurant, yes — it is the one piece of print a seated customer will definitely read, and reading it is what they are doing while they wait. It works much less well for anything where the menu changes often, because you are reprinting the whole run each time.
Why kraft brown rather than white?
Mostly because of what it signals. Kraft reads as casual, artisanal and unfussy, which suits a lot of the independent cafe and burger end of the market. On white glossy the same design reads as a chain. Neither is better — they say different things.
What is the minimum order?
Five hundred. Like car mats these gang up on a large sheet, so the per-unit cost falls steeply with quantity — always ask for 500 and 2,000 side by side before deciding.
