Print the menu you will still be using in six months
The most expensive mistake in menu printing is run length, not paper. A restaurant prints 5,000 menus to get the unit price down, changes three prices two months later, and throws away 4,000.
Before we quote, tell us how often your prices and items move. If the answer is “often”, the right answer is a short run, or a fixed outer menu with a cheap printed insert for the part that changes.
The fold has to be creased, not just folded
At 350gsm with lamination on it, a fold without a crease splits. The lamination cracks and a white line appears down the spine of the menu on day one. Creasing is a separate step on the finishing line and it is the difference between a menu that survives a season and one that looks damaged on arrival.
Laminate for the way the menu is used
A menu that lives on the table and gets wiped between covers wants glossy. A menu that is handed to the guest, read and taken away wants matt — it feels better in the hand and does not carry every fingerprint. The decision is about the service, not the design.
Questions
Menus: Common questions
Should a menu be matt or glossy laminated?
Glossy if the menu stays on the table and gets wiped down between covers — it sheds oil and water better. Matt if the menu is handed out and taken away, or if you photograph it for social media, because matt does not blow out under a flash and shows far fewer fingerprints.
Why does the menu need creasing before folding?
Laminated 350gsm cracks along a fold if it is simply folded — the lamination splits and the white core shows as a line. Creasing crushes the fibres along the fold line first so the board bends instead of breaking. It is a separate finishing step and it is not optional at this weight.
How often will I need to reprint?
That is the real question with menus, and it is why run length matters more than unit price. If your prices move every quarter, a run of 5,000 is money burnt. Print 500 at a time and accept the higher unit cost, or design a menu with a separate insert for the items that change.
Can you set the menu in Arabic as well as English?
Yes, and we set Arabic as live right-to-left text rather than pasting in an image, which keeps it sharp at the small sizes menu descriptions use. Send your item list in whichever language you have it and we will typeset both.
