Build your specification

Choose what you need and send it over. Your selection arrives with the enquiry, so the quote comes back against the exact specification rather than a guess at it.

Size

DL takes an A4 letter folded in three. A5 takes it folded once. A4 takes it flat.

It is the first thing opened, and the first thing judged

An envelope is read before the letter inside it. For an invoice or a contract that matters more than it sounds — a flimsy, misaligned envelope sets the tone for the document inside, and nobody says so out loud.

Match it to the letterhead, properly

The envelope, the letterhead and the invoice book should carry the same address, the same phone number and the same trade licence line. This sounds obvious and it is the single most common inconsistency we find: a company changes office or number, reprints the letterhead, and keeps using three boxes of old envelopes.

If we are producing more than one of these for you, we check them against each other before anything prints.

Leave the machine its room

If your envelopes go through a franking machine or an automated inserter, the bottom right of the face and a strip along the top have to stay clear. Tell us before we design, not after the run — it is a two-minute constraint at artwork stage and an expensive one afterwards.

Questions

Envelopes: Common questions

Which envelope size do I need?

DL is the standard business envelope and takes an A4 letter folded into three — that covers invoices, statements and letters. A5 takes an A4 folded once, which suits certificates and anything you would rather not crease twice. A4 takes documents flat and is what contracts and tenancy paperwork go in.

Is 100gsm enough, or should I go to 120?

For ordinary correspondence 100gsm is fine. Go to 120gsm when the contents are confidential — at 100gsm you can often read a cheque or a figure through the paper when it is held to the light, and 120gsm stops that.

Can the envelope match my letterhead exactly?

Yes, and it should. If we are printing both we colour-match them on the same press run where the quantities allow, and check the address block on one against the other. Mismatched stationery is the thing people actually notice.

Do you print window envelopes?

Tell us what you need. The standard sizes here are plain-faced; a window changes the dieline and the minimum run. If you are sending accounting-software invoices, a window saves addressing every envelope, so it is usually worth asking about.
