What direct printing is for

Some things cannot be a sticker. A machine plate that lives next to a motor, an asset tag on a scaffold component, a door sign in a corridor people brush past — in all of these the adhesive gives up long before the print does.

Printing directly onto the panel removes that failure point entirely. The ink is cured onto the substrate itself.

This is specifically covered by our trade licence, which permits printing onto plastic, glass, metal, wood and ceramics.

Choosing a substrate

  • Acrylic — clean, modern, indoor. Reception signs, room names, plaques. Available clear, white or coloured, 2 to 10 mm.
  • Aluminium composite — a rigid sandwich panel. Light, flat, weather-resistant, and the standard for larger flat signage.
  • Aluminium and steel plate — machine plates, asset tags, anything industrial.
  • Timber and MDF — interior décor, hospitality, feature signage. Not for outdoors here.
  • Ceramic tile — decorative and commemorative pieces.

Mounting

Decide this before production, because it determines the drilling:

  • Adhesive pads — clean, no holes, only for light indoor panels
  • Screws — direct through drilled holes, the most secure
  • Standoffs — chrome or brushed barrels holding the panel off the wall. Considerably better looking, and needs precisely positioned holes.

Tell us the mounting method and the wall type and we will drill accordingly.

Questions

Panel printing: Common questions

Why print directly onto the panel instead of applying a sticker?

Because adhesive fails long before print does. On a machine, in a yard, or anywhere hot, a vinyl label lifts at the edges and eventually peels. Ink printed directly onto the substrate and cured has nothing to peel. It costs more per piece and much less over the life of the equipment.

Can you print onto clear acrylic?

Yes, and there are two approaches. Printing on the reverse face and viewing through the acrylic gives a glossy, protected finish that suits reception signage. Printing on the front is simpler and better where the panel will be viewed from both sides.

Do you cut the panels to shape?

Yes, cut to size with drilled fixing holes or rounded corners as required. Tell us how it is being mounted — adhesive, screws or standoffs — because that determines the hole positions and the thickness we recommend.

Will printed metal plates survive a factory?

Direct print on metal is considerably more robust than a label, but it is not indestructible. Where a plate will be abraded or exposed to solvents, say so before we quote — the substrate and the finish both change.
