What's included
In the price you are quoted
- File checking before printing
- A digital proof, and a printed proof where colour is critical
- Advice on whether digital or offset is the cheaper route for your quantity
What digital printing actually is
A digital press works much like a very good office printer scaled up: the image is sent straight from the file to the press with no plates in between.
That single difference drives everything else about it. No plates means no setup cost, which means printing ten copies is economically sensible. It also means every sheet can be different, which is how numbering and personalisation are done.
When to choose it
- Short runs. Under about 500 copies, digital is nearly always cheaper.
- Urgent work. No plate making means the job starts sooner.
- Anything that changes. Price lists, menus and rate cards that will be revised are better printed in smaller digital runs more often than in one large offset run that goes out of date.
- Variable data. Sequential numbers, individual names, barcodes.
When not to
Large quantities. Once you are into thousands, offset becomes markedly cheaper per copy and the gap widens with volume. If you know you need 5,000 flyers, ask for both prices before deciding.
Which one is right for your job
Tell us the quantity, the size and the paper, and we will tell you which process is cheaper. There is no advantage to us in steering you toward one over the other, and quoting both takes a minute.
Questions
Digital printing: Common questions
When is digital cheaper than offset?
Below roughly 500 to 1,000 copies, almost always, because digital has no plate setup to pay for. Above that, offset overtakes it and keeps getting cheaper per copy. The exact crossover depends on the size and the number of colours, and we will tell you which side of it your job falls on.
Is digital printing lower quality?
Not in any way most people would notice. Offset still has an edge on very large solid areas of flat colour and on exact spot-colour matching. For text, photographs and normal commercial work, the difference is not visible without looking for it.
Can you print just one copy?
Yes. That is one of the main advantages of digital, and it is why proofs, single presentations and one-off certificates are printed this way.
