Why 3D letters rather than a flat board

A flat printed board is cheaper and reads as cheaper. Individual letters standing off the wall cast a shadow, catch light differently through the day, and look like a business that intends to stay.

For a shopfront, a reception wall, or a building entrance, it is usually the right call.

Choosing the material

Acrylic — light, any colour, and the only practical option for letters lit through the face. The default for retail and food.

Stainless steel — brushed or mirror finish. Reads as premium, survives outdoors well, and suits halo lighting. Heavier and more expensive.

Brushed aluminium — much of the look of steel at lower weight and cost. Good for interior reception walls.

Powder-coated steel — where you need an exact brand colour with metal durability.

Lighting, which changes the whole effect

Frontlit — light through the letter face. The letters glow. Bright, obvious, best for high-street retail.

Halo / backlit — light behind the letters onto the wall. The letters stay dark and are outlined in glow. Considerably more expensive-looking than it costs.

Edge-lit — light escapes the letter edges only. Subtle, for interiors.

Unlit — fine for interior walls or a frontage with strong ambient light. Outdoors, it vanishes after sunset.

How this is delivered

Falcon designs the sign and produces the printed elements. Fabrication, fixing and the permit are handled by a licensed Dubai signage partner — the drilling, the working at height, and the municipal approval sit with the party licensed to do them.

Questions

3D letter signage: Common questions

Acrylic or stainless steel?

Acrylic is lighter, cheaper, takes any colour, and is the only sensible choice if the letters need to be illuminated through the face. Stainless steel reads as more substantial and lasts better outdoors, but it is heavier, costs more, and is usually halo-lit from behind rather than lit through.

Should the letters be illuminated?

If you trade after dark, yes — an unlit sign simply disappears, and in Dubai that is most of your evening trade. Halo lighting looks considerably more expensive than frontlighting for a similar cost and suits steel letters.

How big should the letters be?

A rough guide: minimum letter height in centimetres roughly matches the viewing distance in metres. Read from 20 metres, letters want to be around 20cm tall. Landlords and authorities often cap the size, so the permitted maximum is worth confirming before design.

Who obtains the permit?

The installing partner, as part of the job. Outdoor signage in Dubai requires approval and the requirements vary by area and by landlord, so it is handled by the party that holds the licence for that work.
