What's included
In the price you are quoted
- Advice on whether offset or digital is cheaper for your quantity
- Pre-press file checking and imposition
- A digital proof, with a wet proof available where colour is critical
How offset differs
In offset printing the image is etched onto a metal plate, transferred to a rubber blanket, and from there onto the paper. Making those plates costs money and time before a single sheet is printed.
That cost is fixed. Print 200 copies and it dominates the price. Print 20,000 and it disappears into the unit cost, which is why offset gets cheaper per copy the more you print, and digital does not.
Where offset wins
- Volume. The single biggest reason to choose it.
- Exact colour. Spot inks are mixed to a specific reference, so a corporate colour reproduces identically every run. CMYK approximates; spot matches.
- Large sheets. More items fit on each sheet, which reduces waste and cost.
- Unusual stocks. Textured, uncoated and heavy boards that digital presses handle poorly or not at all.
Where it does not
Short runs, urgent jobs, and anything that needs to vary sheet to sheet. For those, digital is both cheaper and faster.
Planning an offset job
Two things are worth deciding early because they are expensive to change later: the final quantity, and whether you need a spot colour. Both affect the plates, and the plates are made before printing starts.
Questions
Offset printing: Common questions
What is the minimum quantity for offset printing?
There is no hard minimum, but there is a practical one. Below roughly 500 copies the plate setup dominates the price and digital will be cheaper. The crossover point varies with size and colour count, so it is worth asking for both prices when you are near it.
What is a spot colour and do I need one?
A spot colour is a specific ink mixed to an exact reference rather than built from CMYK. You need one if your brand colour has to match precisely across every print run — some corporate blues and reds simply cannot be reproduced accurately in CMYK. For most work, CMYK is fine.
Does offset take longer than digital?
Yes, because plates have to be made and the press set up before anything prints. Plan for a longer lead time on offset work, and tell us early if you have a fixed deadline.
