Choosing the material

Three variants cover almost every job:

Frontlit flex — the standard banner. Slightly translucent, which is fine against a wall and a problem against glass.

Blockout flex — an opaque core stops anything behind showing through. The right choice against windows, glass or dark surfaces.

Mesh — perforated so wind passes through. Essential for hoardings, rooftops and anything high or exposed. A solid banner in wind is a sail, and it will either tear or take its fixings with it.

Finishing

Hemming folds and welds the edge so it does not fray. Eyelets are the metal rings you tie through. Both are standard on our banners rather than extras, because a banner without them is unusable.

Spacing matters: 50cm between eyelets is normal, 30cm for anything large or windy. If it is being tied to a fence, tell us, because the spacing should match the fence.

Artwork and viewing distance

The most common problem with banner artwork is not resolution. It is that the text is sized for a screen rather than for a reader thirty metres away.

A rough guide: minimum letter height in centimetres should be about the viewing distance in metres. Read from 20 metres, your smallest text needs to be around 20cm tall. That constraint means less copy, which almost always improves the banner.

Questions

Flex printing: Common questions

What is the difference between flex and mesh?

Flex is a solid PVC sheet. Mesh is perforated, so wind passes through it. Anywhere exposed to wind — a hoarding, a rooftop, the side of a building — should be mesh, because a solid banner in wind acts as a sail and will tear itself or its fixings.

Why does my banner need blockout material?

Because a standard frontlit banner is slightly translucent. If light or a dark surface sits behind it, that shows through and washes out the print. Blockout flex has an opaque core, and it is worth specifying for anything hung against glass or in front of a window.

How far apart should eyelets be?

Every 50cm is the usual spacing and holds well in normal conditions. For anything large or exposed, 30cm is safer. Tell us how it will be fixed and we will space them to suit.

Will the banner fade?

Outdoors in Dubai, yes, and faster than in most climates. A UV laminate substantially slows it and is worth the small additional cost on anything expected to last more than a few months.
