What you can order

If what you need is not listed, ask — this is what we make most often, not a limit.

TypesOffice door plates · desk and counter nameplates · floor and unit directories · room numbers · meeting room signs
MaterialsTwo-tone engraving acrylic · brushed stainless steel · brass · anodised aluminium. Acrylic is the usual choice; steel and brass read heavier and cost more.
How it is cutRotary or laser engraved. Two-tone acrylic is a coloured surface over a contrasting core, so the engraving reveals the second colour rather than adding ink.
SizesCommon door plate sizes run from 60 × 200 mm to 150 × 300 mm. Desk nameplates are usually 50 × 200 mm. Custom to your frame or door.
FixingDouble-sided adhesive pads, chrome standoffs for a raised look, or a slide-in frame where the insert changes.
LanguagesArabic and English on the same plate, with the Arabic set right-to-left as proper joined letterforms.

Build your specification

Choose what you need and send it over. Your selection arrives with the enquiry, so the quote comes back against the exact specification rather than a guess at it.

Engraved survives the cleaner, printed does not

The difference between an engraved plate and a printed one shows up after about a year, and it shows up because of cleaning.

A printed plate is ink on top of a surface. Office cleaning chemicals lift it, normally starting at an edge or a corner, and once it starts it looks worse every week. Engraving cuts through a coloured top layer into a core of a different colour, so the lettering is the material. There is nothing sitting on top to remove.

That is the whole argument for engraving at this size, and it is why a plate that costs a little more lasts several times longer.

Decide what the plate says before you decide what it is made of

A plate carrying a department, a room number or a function — Accounts, Meeting Room 2, Staff Only — will outlive everyone who works behind the door. Fix it permanently and forget it.

A plate carrying a person’s name will not. People are promoted, move desks and leave. If that is what you are ordering, use a slide-in frame: the frame stays on the door, and only the insert changes. Over a few staff changes it costs a fraction of replacing the plate each time, and the door never has that period of showing the wrong name because nobody got round to reordering.

It is a two-minute decision at the start that saves a recurring small expense.

Arabic on a small plate is where typesetting shows

A nameplate is the smallest signage you will order, which makes it the least forgiving place to set Arabic badly. Letterforms that do not join, or Arabic dropped in as an image and scaled, fall apart at 8 or 10 mm high in a way they survive on a shopfront.

We set both languages to the plate rather than fitting English first and squeezing Arabic underneath. On a small plate that balance is most of the difference between something that looks specified and something that looks improvised.

Questions

Engraved nameplates: Common questions

Engraved or printed — which lasts longer?

Engraved, by a wide margin, and the reason is cleaning. A printed plate is ink sitting on a surface, and office cleaning chemicals take it off within a year or two, usually starting at the edges. Engraving cuts through a coloured surface layer into a contrasting core, so the lettering is part of the material. It cannot be wiped off because there is nothing on top to wipe.

What happens when the person changes?

This is the question worth asking before you order. If the plate carries a job title or a department it will outlast several people, so a fixed plate is fine. If it carries a personal name, order a slide-in frame: the frame stays on the door and only the printed or engraved insert is replaced. Over a few years that is considerably cheaper than a new plate each time.

Can you do Arabic and English on one plate?

Yes, and it is what most Dubai offices order. The thing that goes wrong is treating Arabic as a second line squeezed under the English. We set both to the plate size with the Arabic given proper weight and correct joined letterforms, which matters more at nameplate sizes than almost anywhere else because the lettering is small.

Which material should we choose?

Two-tone engraving acrylic for most offices — it is clean, light, cheap to replace and comes in a wide colour range. Brushed stainless steel or brass where the plate is part of a reception or a boardroom and needs to feel substantial. Anodised aluminium sits between the two. For a door plate nobody studies closely, acrylic is the sensible answer.

Do you supply braille or tactile signage?

Tell us what you need. Tactile and braille signage is a specialist build with its own standards for character height, raised depth and mounting position, so it is quoted separately rather than treated as an option on a standard plate.
