Which stand
Roll-up (retractable) — the graphic pulls up out of a weighted aluminium base and hooks onto a pole. Self-supporting, quick to set up, comes in a carry bag. The default choice, and the one worth paying for if it will be used repeatedly.
X-banner — a light frame that the print clips onto at four corners. Cheaper and lighter, but unstable in any draught and visibly less substantial.
Pop-up backdrop — a folding frame with printed fabric or panels, usually 3 × 2.3 m. For exhibition stands and press walls.
Teardrop and feather flags — tall outdoor flags on a flexible pole. Effective at attracting attention from a distance, with a ground spike, cross base or water base depending on the surface.
Design considerations that actually matter
Keep the important content high. On a 200cm stand, everything below about 60cm is behind a table or below eye level. The logo and the message belong in the top two thirds.
Allow for the cassette. The bottom 5 to 8cm rolls into the mechanism. Nothing you need to read should be there.
Less copy than you think. A roll-up is read while walking past. One clear message and a way to make contact beats three paragraphs.
Reloading an existing stand
If you already own roll-up stands, most mechanisms can be reloaded with a new print. That is far cheaper than replacing the hardware. Tell us the make and size, or send a photo of the base, and we will print to fit.
Questions
Banners & roll-up stands: Common questions
What size roll-up stand should I order?
80 × 200 cm is the standard and the one most people mean by a roll-up banner. 100 × 200 has more presence at an exhibition where you are competing for attention. 60 × 200 suits a narrow reception or a corridor.
Can I change the graphic later and keep the stand?
Yes on most roll-up mechanisms — the cassette can be reloaded with a new print, which is considerably cheaper than buying a new stand. Tell us the make of your existing stand and we can usually print a replacement to fit.
What is the difference between a roll-up and an X-banner?
A roll-up retracts into a weighted aluminium base and stands up on its own, which makes it stable and quick to set up. An X-banner is a lightweight frame the print is clipped onto — cheaper and lighter, but easily knocked over and less substantial in appearance.
Should the bottom of the design be important?
No. The bottom 5 to 8 cm of a roll-up graphic sits inside the cassette or is obscured by it, so nothing critical should be placed there. We set the artwork up allowing for it, but it is worth knowing when you plan the design.
