Folded, or stitched

Brochures divide into two kinds, and choosing the wrong one costs money.

Folded leaflets — a single sheet folded once or twice. Tri-fold is the familiar six-panel leaflet. Cheap, quick, and right for anything up to about six short sections.

Booklets — multiple sheets, folded and stapled through the spine. Right for catalogues, company profiles and anything with more content than six panels can carry without becoming cramped.

Planning the page count

A saddle-stitched booklet is built from folded sheets, so the page count is always a multiple of four. Content that runs to 14 pages will become a 16-page booklet. It is far easier to plan for that at the start than to pad it at proof stage.

Creasing

Paper heavier than about 170gsm must be creased before folding. Without it the ink cracks along the fold and shows as a white line, most visibly on dark or saturated colours. We crease as standard on anything that needs it rather than treating it as an upgrade.

Bilingual brochures

An Arabic brochure is not an English brochure with the text swapped. It reads right to left, which means the cover is on the other side and the whole page sequence reverses. We set these up properly rather than mirroring an English layout and hoping.

Questions

Brochures: Common questions

Why do booklet pages have to be in multiples of four?

Because a saddle-stitched booklet is made from folded sheets, and one folded sheet produces four pages. If your content comes to 14 pages, the booklet will be 16 with two pages blank or filled — better to plan for that than to discover it at proof stage.

What is the difference between saddle stitching and perfect binding?

Saddle stitching staples through the fold and lies flat, which suits documents up to roughly 40 pages. Perfect binding glues the pages into a square spine and looks more like a book, which suits thicker catalogues and company profiles.

Do folded brochures need creasing?

Anything above about 170gsm does. Folding heavy paper without creasing it first cracks the printed surface along the fold, which is very visible on dark colours and cannot be fixed afterwards.

Can you design the brochure as well as print it?

Yes. Most of our brochure work includes the design, because the businesses ordering them rarely have a designer in-house. Send us your content, images and logo and we will build it.
