What an NCR book actually is
NCR stands for “no carbon required”. Each sheet is chemically coated so that writing on the top copy transfers to the sheets underneath without a sheet of carbon paper in between. You write once, and every copy in the set is filled in at the same time.
In Dubai these books go by several names depending on who is asking for them — invoice books, bill books, carbonless books, duplicate books, triplicate books, or just “the book”. They are all the same product with a different number of plies and a different heading printed on top.
The books most Dubai businesses order
Almost every trading, contracting or workshop business in Dubai runs on a small set of these:
- Tax invoice books — the one that has to be right, because it is the document your customer files and your auditor checks
- Delivery note and delivery order books — signed at the gate on receipt
- Local Purchase Order (LPO) books — issued to your suppliers
- Receipt and payment voucher books — cash in and cash out
- Petty cash voucher books — small, usually A6, usually 2-part
- Job card books — used heavily by workshops and service companies
If you need several of these, it is worth doing them together. The layout work is shared, the numbering series can be kept consistent across the set, and it saves you reordering three separate times over the following months.
Getting the details right
An invoice book is not a decorative item. It is a document that other people will rely on, so the things that matter are unglamorous:
Your company details must be current. Businesses move, change phone numbers and renew trade licences. If your book still shows an address you left two years ago, that is a problem long before it is an aesthetic one. We check what you send us against what you tell us, and we ask if something looks out of date.
The fields need to be in the right places. There is no point in a beautiful layout if there is nowhere to write the vehicle registration, the LPO reference or the quantity. We lay the form out around how you actually fill it in.
Arabic has to be set as text. A surprising number of printed books in Dubai have Arabic that was screenshotted from somewhere and stretched to fit. It looks soft, it cannot be corrected later, and letters are frequently disconnected or in the wrong order. We set Arabic as live text so it stays sharp and can be edited on your next reorder.
How to order
Send whatever you have. A photo of a page from your current book taken on your phone is genuinely enough to start — it tells us the size, the layout, the number of plies and what fields you use. If you are starting from scratch, tell us your company name, licence details and what the book is for, and we will build it from there.
You will get a proof back showing exactly what will be printed. Nothing goes on press until you say it is right.
Questions
NCR invoice books: Common questions
Can you copy my existing invoice book?
Yes — this is the most common version of this job. Send a clear photo of one page from your current book. We rebuild the layout properly, correct anything that has changed such as your address or phone number, and send you a proof to approve before printing.
What is the difference between 2-part, 3-part and 4-part?
It is the number of copies you get per set. A 2-part book gives you an original plus one copy, usually white and yellow. A 3-part adds a pink copy, and a 4-part adds a blue one. Most Dubai trading and workshop businesses use 3-part: one for the customer, one for accounts, one to stay in the book.
Can the numbering continue from my last book?
Yes. Tell us the last number you used and we start the new books from the next one, so your sequence stays unbroken for your records and your auditor.
Do I need to supply a design file?
No. Most customers do not have one, and that is normal rather than a problem. A photo of an existing book, or even a written list of what you want on it, is enough for us to build the artwork.
What size invoice book should I order?
A5 is the most common for invoices because it holds a reasonable number of line items and still fits a clipboard. A6 suits receipt and payment vouchers where you only need a few lines. A4 is used where you need many line items or a detailed job breakdown, such as workshop repair invoices.
Can you print the book in Arabic and English?
Yes. We set both languages on the same sheet, with the Arabic mirrored properly right-to-left and the columns aligned so the two sides match. This is what most Dubai businesses need when invoicing government entities or Arabic-speaking customers.
